I Want a Country - Scenic & Prop Design

University of the Arts, Levitt Auditorium

I Want a Country is a generalized story on the plight of refugees. The Syrian Refugee Crisis was personal to the director so decided to make our production more specific to the journey of a Syrian refugee. This piece was interactive and had three scenes happening simultaneously in the same space. Audience members were given a map of the ‘refugee camp’ with an outline of their tent scene order. After each audience group visited each tent, they were then guided onto the stage area to board ‘the ship’. Once on the ship, the audience was faced with a series of hyper-realistic projections of rough waters which eventually leads to them capsizing. The show closed with a very big puppet child that I designed and fabricated leaving the ship and taking the other refugees to an unknown place.
